Figure A-D. Representative images of microscopic examination of May-Grünwald-Giemsa-stained bone marrow aspirate smears from patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at diagnosis. Distinct cytomorphological features of blast cells correlate with well-defined genetic AML types (A-C). AML myelodysplasia-related is usually diagnosed if ≥20% of myeloid blasts are present in patients with a known history of myelodysplastic or myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms, such as chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). Dysplastic changes involving myeloid lineages are observed in bone marrow aspirate along with a high percentage of blast cells (D).
