Gynecological Autumn

The present issue of our journal brings forward a major problem of public health in Romania: the lack of organized population screening programs for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer, contrary to the European Council’s recommendations.

The present issue of our journal brings forward a major problem of public health in Romania: the lack of organized population screening programs for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer, contrary to the European Council’s recommendations. An alarming observation shows that only 33% of the targeted population know about the existence of the Romanian national screening program for the early detection of cervical cancer, thus emphasizing the need for better strategies of informing patients not only about testing, but also about HPV vaccination. Three interesting cases of cervical cancer, diagnosed in 26-year-old and 63-year-old patients, are presented. In addition, taking into account that breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death among women, we bring into discussion breast oncogenesis and models of breast cancer risk prediction.

In the obstetrical section, it is discussed the diagnosis of vasa praevia; although a relatively rare condition, its association with a high perinatal mortality rate warrants routine ultrasound screening for the umbilical cord insertion site and a prompt management. Furthermore, we present an interesting case of a 31-year-old patient with kidney transplant, having a 38-week pregnancy and being diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

It is a well-known fact that twin pregnancy is a high-risk pregnancy, being associated with increased both perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The study published in the journal assesses the differences between the complications occurred in twin newborns resulted from spontaneously obtained pregnancies versus in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancies. Moreover, we present the results of a review on delayed cord clamping in newborns resulting from multiple gestations.

One of the most clinically critical diseases in newborns is the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and the availability of proper intensive care facilities is of paramount importance. We report the results of a prospective study that tried to identify the clinical characteristics of 133 newborns with RDS who needed transportation by ambulance to tertiary neonatal services.

In the interdisciplinary section, the general principles of endodontic treatment in pregnancy are discussed and several precautions that need to be taken are presented, such as: the need for radiological examination, the use of local anesthetics and antibiotics and dental isolation with rubber dam system.

Finally, please remember two important scientific events that are taking place this fall: The 9th Congress of the Romanian Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (22-25 September 2021, Sibiu) and The 12th National Conference of the Romanian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (28-30 October 2021, Cluj-Napoca), both in a hybrid form. Together with our colleagues and the international guests, we hope that both these events will be of great success and that the lectures, e-posters and courses will raise the interest of the audience, as they will bring into attention the newest data in our speciality.
