Best solution for mental health support for menopause

Managing mental health during menopause requires a comprehensive approach, as hormonal shifts can lead to mood swings, anxiety and depression. Therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), can help individuals address negative thought patterns and develop coping strategies. In some cases, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be effective in balancing hormonal fluctuations, alleviating mood disturbances and other symptoms. Support groups, both in-person and online, offer a sense of community and a platform for shared experiences, while mindfulness practices like meditation and yoga help regulate emotions and reduce stress. Regular physical activity not only boosts mood, but also supports better sleep, which is often disrupted during menopause. Proper nutrition, with a focus on omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and reducing caffeine intake, can further enhance emotional well-being. Additionally, good sleep hygiene, along with alternative therapies like acupuncture or aromatherapy, may provide relief from both physical and emotional symptoms. Understanding the changes that occur during menopause can also alleviate anxiety, and adopting self-compassion can help reduce frustration. For more severe symptoms, medications such as antidepressants may be prescribed, while spiritual practices and hobbies can offer comfort and purpose. Ultimately, a combination of therapy, lifestyle changes, medical interventions and social support is essential for managing mental health during menopause, ensuring that women navigate this life transition with resilience and confidence.

I would like to draw the attention towards mental health support from given points. Because it will heal the rest of the points and it will be the focal point to treat menopause. Sri Lanka took a monumental step forward in advancing preventive brain health through promoting neurological education and training in a Preventive Brain Health Week 2024 at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU).

Brain Health Awareness Week focused on the Life’s Ten Principles, a comprehensive approach to fostering brain health across KDU’s staff, students, patients and their families. Healthy living is best supported by adopting a lifestyle that emphasizes healthy eating, regular physical activity and quality sleep, all of which laying the foundation for overall well-being. Effectively managing stress, controlling blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and maintaining proper lipid regulation are essential for preventing chronic diseases. Additionally, avoiding smoking, keeping a healthy abdominal circumference and engaging actively in social and mental activities further enhance physical and mental health. Together, these practices contribute to a balanced, fulfilling and health-conscious life.

Emphasis is placed on the adoption of Life’s Ten Principles, with each day being dedicated to two of these foundational guidelines. This approach, which is the first of its kind in the world, is designed to promote holistic well-being and a balanced lifestyle. Menopause care must adopt an inclusive and personalized approach, as has been done by these ten principles. We have witnessed the success of this program at our institution.
