Endometriosis – diagnosis and management

Radu Vlădăreanu

13 Martie 2020

The first issue of the Ginecologia.ro journal in 2020 addresses mainly a pathology with multiple health and social implications – endometriosis. The first article in the gynecology section represents a review focusing on the data available regarding endometriosis biomarkers found in plasma, urine, peritoneum and endometrium, and on their role in noninvasive diagnosis.

The next paper – a review of the current scientific literature on the clinical pattern and treatment of abdominal wall endometriosis – concludes that pain is the main symptom of this entity and that, even though medical treatment can be used, surgical excision is the treatment of choice.

Moving on, the firsthand method of evaluating patients with ovarian and deep infiltrating endometriosis – intravaginal ultrasound – is largely presented in a literature review, addressing the four main steps an ultrasound should have in order to diagnose correctly.

The last paper in the field of endometriosis focuses on the main pharmaceutical methods used in the treatment of endometriosis and on the recurrence rate of this disease. The authors recommend the long-term use of medical therapy both in order to treat endometriosis and to prevent recurrence after surgical treatment.

The obstetrics field begins with a paper regarding the main maternal and fetal adverse effects of the intrapartum use of oxytocin, paying particular attention to the need of a clear usage protocol in order to early recognize the adverse effects, preventing fetal and maternal complications. A clinical study on inherited thrombophilia, a major problem due to the possibility of recurrent pregnancy loss, remarks the importance of personal and family history in the early diagnosis of the pathology.

The interdisciplinary section is represented by two articles regarding the dynamics of periodontal tissue in menopause and the treatment of cervical dental lesions during pregnancy.

In the end, it is our great pleasure to invite all of you to two prestigious events in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Firstly, the Ginecologia.ro Forum – which this year focuses on “Hot Topics in Obstetrics and Gynecology” – will take place between the 13th and the 14th of March 2020 at Hotel Ramada Parc, Bucharest. Also, between the 23rd and 25th of April 2020, Prof. Dr. Elvira Brătilă will host, in Bucharest, an European Endometrios League Masterclass.
