Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency: another COPD?
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is an inherited disease related to the early onset of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), mostly in smoking patients. It consists of several genetic variations, each one with its own risks regarding COPD development and progression, but all of them highly dependent on tobacco habits and ambiental exposure to noxes. Althogh symptoms begin early, most of the patients are diagnosed as asthma patients and a delay in the diagnosis of AATD is very common.
